Extreme Ownership.
It's not only the name of the book that this week's One Book, One Concept comes from but it is also the concept that I want to explore in this article.
Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win is written by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, two decorated Navy SEALs who served our country in Iraq. The book is filled with valuable leadership lessons that carry over from battlefield to all facets of life, including business and sports.
Extreme Ownership - What does it mean?
Extreme Ownership is the concept of leaders taking complete ownership of anything that has gone wrong with their team. The leader of any team is ultimately responsible for the success or failure of his team and that "leader must own everything in his or her world".
How should leaders handle things that go wrong?
Willink says that "The leader must acknowledge mistakes and admit failures, take ownership of them, and develop a plan to win."
"Total responsibility for failure is a difficult thing to accept". Although, as Willink states, this is not an easy task, true leaders are ultimately able to find the "humility and courage" to do it because that is what their teams need from them.
Leadership is not about being perfect. Things are going to go wrong, or have room for improvement, no matter how well they were prepared for.
Mistakes are going to happen. OWN them. Learn from them. Make your team better and move on. (And repeat!)
That's what Navy SEALs do. That's what Leaders do. That's what you should do.
The concept of Extreme Ownership is one of many powerful lessons in Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. I highly recommend reading books on leadership from fields or professions different from your own and this book is a great place to start doing that. I hope you enjoy it.
