What does it take to be a great post player?...I would say it's the same thing that makes a great ice cream sundae! Let me explain.
There are many different skills and attributes that could potentially be part of the make-up of a post player. In my opinion the 3 most important ones are:
Do I like toppings on my sundae? Of course!! Who doesn't?! Every other skill is like a topping. Low-post offense. A perimeter jumper. The ability to put the ball on the floor. To me those are the equivalent of whipped cream, chocolate syrup and the cherry on top.
So you're a good shooter?! That's great but you better be able to defend, rebound and run the floor. A nice outside shot without the 3 most important skills is like serving me a bowl of just chocolate syrup. I like chocolate syrup....but I want it on top of scoops of ice cream. I don't want to eat a whole bowl of it by itself!!
A perfect example is Tristan Thompson. He averaged 8.5 PPG this past season...and he is going to get a MAX contract this summer! Why? It's not because of his 8.5 PPG. It's because he defends, rebounds and runs the floor. 3 scoops!
